Anatomy reveals, how giraffes keep their long neck high, without using muscles!

Image
Giraffe’s neck consists of seven vertebrae like any other mammals. Only difference is that, all individual vertebrae are elongated, usually more than ten inches in length.  Moreover, a normal giraffes neck is almost 6-foot long and weighs around 270 kg. [1] Anyone with basic knowledge in zoology wonders how an animal like giraffe can hold such a heavy neck, always high above the ground! The secret lies in its anatomy. A giraffe’s neck contains huge amounts of muscle. Obviously it needs that. But that is not holding its neck so high. It is a band of elastic tissue, a ligament that runs from top of the neck to start of tail vertebrae. Actually the ligament band is normally holding its neck high by just pulling its neck against the weight of head and neck. The weight of its head is acting downward and the ligament is holding it upward. So the natural position for giraffe’s head is almost 55˚ from horizontal level. It is using its muscles to lower its head ...

Whales are the largest living organisms living on the surface of Earth. An adult blue whale weighs up to 173 tonnes with 30 meters in length. [1] When a whale dies in the ocean, its body usually falls to the sea floor and becomes a huge source of organic matter for the animals that live there. This is known as a Whale fall. Animal communities forms around the whale carcass called Whale fall communities. What happens to whales when they die? Three things can happen to dead bodies of whal...

Galls eels, the transparent fishes

Image
This article was originally posted at Amazing Zoology . View original article at http://amzoo.in/jny-9 Flat and transparent larva of eels are called as Leptocephalus (slim head). Fishes with a leptocephalus larval stage include the most familiar eels such as the conger, moray eel, and garden eel as well as members of the family Anguillidae. Glass eel is a developmental stage from the end of metamorphosis in the leptocephalus to the beginning of pigmentation. Leptocephalus larva undergoes metamorphosis and enters a stage called as glass eels, before entering freshwater. It has the shape of an adult eel, with small size and without any pigmentation. Following this stage the young eels are called “elvers”. You may be interested in  Whale Falls and Whale fall communities .
